365 photos from 2008.04.13 - 2009.04.12

In an attempt to improve my photographic skills I decided to take one photo a day that I feel is worth sharing publicly. This gallery will chronicle the project. I know this is going to be fairly tough to do, but I hope that I can turn it in to a habit. I promise not to back fill any days I miss.

2008.06.10 - I decided it was silly to not back fill if I had taken the picture on a day, but didn't get a chance to post it on the same day. So I am now back filling. I will comment on a current day picture if I add a back fill that same day.

A preview of October in New England... Even the flowers know autumn is coming. I have no idea what plant this is, but it was growing in bed at the apartment complex entrance.

*Mystery Solved! - Thanks CSPics, it does indeed seem to be some variety of Lantana.

Shot on a light gray table and composed as a 3 shot HDR.

Power.

In case you missed the news, the Canon 50D was announced today. My Rebel XT is getting a little long in the tooth. I would love to upgrade to the 5D replacement (it will likely be announced in late September), but it would be an expensive endeavor so the 50D is probably where I will be headed.

Nikonians: expect the D90 to be announced tomorrow. It supposedly records HD video.

I went in to Lowell this evening to meet some friends for dinner. A few weeks ago when I was there a bridge over one of the canals was covered in several hundred spiders. Unfortunately I didn't have my camera with me at that time, but I remembered to bring it with me today. Sadly all the spiders have moved on to new homes so I took a photo of one of the Middlesex Community College buildings.

Another bonsai photo. Our Suriname Cherry (eugenia myrtifolia) is flowering... and by flowering i mean it has two flowers. I was surprised it flowered at all this year after loosing about half its foliage and roots in heavy pruning. Apparently these cherries flower twice a year and have fruit which are edible. The ants feel the flowers are as well.

I used HDR and Lab color adjustment to add similar depth like in the coffee cup picture.

We stopped by Bonsai West today to get some fertilizer and walk around the greenhouses. This I believe is an old Ficus and my favorite picture of the day. I was able to easily get positioned for a nicer perspective.

I've recently been considering picking up a G9 (or G10 if it comes out soon) as I find our current P&S to be inadequate. I also would like to be able to cheaply take a camera underwater and a G9/10 would make that possible. There are rumors that the G10 will shoot HD video and/or use a CMOS sensor. Of course there are what appear to be accidentally leaked specs of the 50D on the Canon CN site... tempting.

I have been thinking about taking this shot every time I have a latte. This is actually a 5 exposure HDR which really helps draw the texture out of the bottom of the cup and the table it is sitting on.

The drink was good...

Yesterday I set out at dusk to visit a field next to my apartment complex to take a photo of some wildflowers that had bloomed earlier this week. I set down my camera, begin to open my tripod, and out come the mosquitoes. As quickly as I could I grabbed everything, closed the tripod, and ran for it. Sadly I was hit 9 times during my escape.

Cut to today... As I drove in to the apartment I noticed I might be able to get the shot I wanted from a different location and without requiring stepping in to a field. In the end it seems Massachusetts is simply overrun with mosquitoes. We don't spray here so with the way the weather has been they are out of control. I had to settle with just a few quick shots before I had to retreat once again (with another three bites).

Here's the best I could do with what I shot, processed with the Orton effect.

I saw there have been cases of West Nile in MA. I sure hope I don't get infected with that.

It has been another on and off stormy week. Shortly after getting home from work it started to drizzle and looking off the deck I had a perfect view of these two rainbows.

I love it when the trees are illuminated like this. I'm under a dark dense cloud, but the trees are hit by the sun.

Lowell has been running a summer music series for the past few years. We made it to a show last year and last night was the first one we are going to in 2008. This is Brandi Carlile and she put on a awesome show last night. After doing her full set with the band she came back to sing for another 25 minutes of whatever came to mind. Hopefully I can find a recording of the show last night...

See more photos from the show here.

Maybe this is a return to daily photos?
