365 photos from 2008.04.13 - 2009.04.12

In an attempt to improve my photographic skills I decided to take one photo a day that I feel is worth sharing publicly. This gallery will chronicle the project. I know this is going to be fairly tough to do, but I hope that I can turn it in to a habit. I promise not to back fill any days I miss.

2008.06.10 - I decided it was silly to not back fill if I had taken the picture on a day, but didn't get a chance to post it on the same day. So I am now back filling. I will comment on a current day picture if I add a back fill that same day.

Oliver Chong > 2008.07.12 - Day 91 :

Irene and I took an introductory course on Bonsai this afternoon at Bonsai West. The course is titled, "Yours, Mine, and Ours" and is intended to be taken as a pair. You each work with your own tree first and then sculpt one together. The course was great. We both had a fun time and really learned quite a lot. If you are ever in the Littleton, MA area I strongly recommend stopping by the Bonsai West nursery.

This is a picture of the tree we created together. It is a cherry tree that is roughly 8" tall. I obviously went with an artistic look, but pictures of the three trees can be found here.

I walk past these pipes in the garage everyday and I have always thought they would make an interesting photo. Today I decided it was sufficiently late that I could be playing with my tripod in the middle of the apartment garage... though it may have given a worse impression if someone had come in while I was there considering it is after 11 at night.

Just a shot of a shot. We are trying a variety of coffee beans to see which we prefer for espresso and so far the Jamaican Blue Mountain is winning out. It's just so smooth with great flavor. This is El Salvador that we got in yesterday from Fresh Coffee Now in Burlington, VT. We are also waiting for a blend to come from over near the San Fransisco area.

P.S. We are pretty much complete beginners when it comes to espresso... other than we know that it makes for a better drink than drip. We purchased a used Gaggia Espresso which works great. It is a bit more manual than some of the newer ones, but does everything well.
Oliver Chong > 2008.07.06 - Day 85 :

If you look back on June 19th I took a photo of some flowers I got for Irene. Well when cleaning today I found two petals from that had fallen off the orange flower.

As an experiment I tried focus stacking a few exposures. I continuously find that the Sigma 70-300mm has it's limits. It's sharpness falls off quickly from the center and the focus ring is really too soft for being very exact. After a few tries, I am reasonably happy with this final image.

Taken with natural light from the window on a white poster board.

Back fill 1, back fill 2, and back fill 3.
Oliver Chong > 2008.07.04 - Day 83 :

We considered going to Boston to see the fireworks along the Charles river, but that would have been incredibly hectic and would have made for a long trip back home. Instead we went to Lowell and watched the fireworks at the Merrimack river. We are positioned probably about a half mile down the river from where they are being launched. It was a pretty nice display that went on for about 20~25 minutes.

This is one of my favorites because it not only has some of the aerial shells, but the fountains as well. I got quite a few shots that I am happy with. Enough to make a gallery with I think.

Unfortunately, leaving the field where we were parked my car was hit. My poor Rav4, not a scratch on it until now. That put a damper on the night. Oh well, insurance will work it out and I will get a new bumper.
Oliver Chong > 2008.07.01 - Day 80 :

A pretty sky showed itself as the last rays of sunlight hit the remains of passing storm clouds.
Oliver Chong > 2008.06.30 - Day 79 :

I took apart our new (used) espresso machine to clean it and as I was putting the tools away I saw promise of an interesting photo...
Oliver Chong > 2008.06.29 - Day 78 :

It seems to have become regular that at least one strong thunderstorm visits the area every afternoon. This is actually irregular for MA. I tried to capture the incredible rate that the rain was falling at the time. One of the roads I was driving on during a storm had at least 6" of water on it.

Who knew sand castles could be so tasty?! This went down a lot easier than those I remember as a little kid...

The couple I posted a picture of earlier in the year were married today. Congrats Ryan and Jenna! The reception was held just over the bridge on to Cape Cod.

I'm not too happy with the technical aspects of this picture, but the subject was super. There's only so much you can do with on camera flash.
