365 photos from 2008.04.13 - 2009.04.12

In an attempt to improve my photographic skills I decided to take one photo a day that I feel is worth sharing publicly. This gallery will chronicle the project. I know this is going to be fairly tough to do, but I hope that I can turn it in to a habit. I promise not to back fill any days I miss.

2008.06.10 - I decided it was silly to not back fill if I had taken the picture on a day, but didn't get a chance to post it on the same day. So I am now back filling. I will comment on a current day picture if I add a back fill that same day.

Oliver Chong > 2008.10.19 - Day ? :

I just got set up in time to take this shot from Jen and Phillipe's in Lowell. If you remember, earlier this year I took a picture from the same location, but while the sun was still in the sky.

I wish the branches in front of the water weren't there, but there's not much I can do about that.

I've tried to take this shot previously, but I lacked two things at that time: control over my lighting and a lens that could get close enough.

The rose is one of a dozen I gave Irene on our anniversary earlier this week.

Uncropped, unadjusted, and unedited beyond removing a dust spot.

Unfortunately, our bonsai have fungus gnats. It's probably party my fault for watering too frequently, but after moving the plants inside I thought they were dropping leaves from being too dry. In actuality it was probably they experienced too much cold outside before moving in.

Yesterday at the grocery store I saw they had Venus Flytraps so I purchased one in hopes that it will snack on some of the gnats. A simpler solution would probably be just to buy one of those sticky fly strips, but it's not nearly as interesting of a solution. Within 10 minutes of putting the Venus Flytrap between the plants I saw it snatch a gnat. There is hope...

This is a 15 shot macro focus stack.

This clover (?) sprouted at the base of one of our bonsai. Seeing the little hairs on the leaves is a little bit creepy.

I was playing with hand held flash positioning while using the 100mm macro. I think I'm going to end up building a rig to position the flash at the front of the lens w/ a larger diffuser.

The day before this shot was taken I was in awe of the trees around the apartment in the morning light. It looked as though it was pretty much the perfect time for the shot so I decided I would bring the camera down the next day (today) and take a few quick shots before heading to work. Well it turned out that there was just enough cloud cover to prevent the golden light from illuminating the leaves.

So, I figured as an alternate I could take a picture of the scenery along the drive to work. It turns out my GPS non-stick weighted holder also keeps my camera in place decently well. A guess at the exposure based on what I was metering at a stop light and a few exposures using the remote trigger produced this shot. I cropped off the unnecessary sky and part of the dashboard still in view. You can easily tell which direction I drive to get to work.

*Yes it was somewhat unsafe to attempt this, but since I was using the remote trigger I figured the largest risk was that the camera would fall. I'm happy it didn't.

I tried to setup a shot here using three different colored leaves, but I couldn't get a composition I loved and since I was short on time I just used the existing florescent lighting. Well, I wasn't able to get the colors back the way I knew they were so I settled on black and white.

Can you guess the colors of the leaves?

The other aspect of fall is bringing in the plants that can't survive the New England winter. Our bonsai definitely fall in to that category. They actually moved inside last weekend, but it took me until today to set up a proper growing situation.

4000 lumens at 3500K using 60 watts from the two CFL work lights will hopefully keep them happy until the spring. This is certainly more light than they were receiving through the window and I question if it is more than they were getting on the deck...

My newest lens addition arrived today - the Canon 100mm f/2.8 Macro. This is thankfully funded partially as an anniversary gift from Irene and the rest from the sale of my Sigma 70-300 Macro to my brother. Only the Canon 17-55mm f/2.8 needed to complete my lineup.

We took a short walk and this is my favorite shot. Uncropped and unedited beyond a bit of sharpening. I wish I had put the CPL on, but I am very happy with the contrast and color the lens captures. I love the brokeh as well.

Living in New England there is always an obvious subject at this time of year...

Taken with a CPL and post processed with the Orton effect.
