Oliver Chong > 2008.10.16 - Day ? :

This clover (?) sprouted at the base of one of our bonsai. Seeing the little hairs on the leaves is a little bit creepy.

I was playing with hand held flash positioning while using the 100mm macro. I think I'm going to end up building a rig to position the flash at the front of the lens w/ a larger diffuser.
Oliver Chong > 2008.10.14 - Day ? :

The day before this shot was taken I was in awe of the trees around the apartment in the morning light. It looked as though it was pretty much the perfect time for the shot so I decided I would bring the camera down the next day (today) and take a few quick shots before heading to work. Well it turned out that there was just enough cloud cover to prevent the golden light from illuminating the leaves.

So, I figured as an alternate I could take a picture of the scenery along the drive to work. It turns out my GPS non-stick weighted holder also keeps my camera in place decently well. A guess at the exposure based on what I was metering at a stop light and a few exposures using the remote trigger produced this shot. I cropped off the unnecessary sky and part of the dashboard still in view. You can easily tell which direction I drive to get to work.

*Yes it was somewhat unsafe to attempt this, but since I was using the remote trigger I figured the largest risk was that the camera would fall. I'm happy it didn't.

I tried to setup a shot here using three different colored leaves, but I couldn't get a composition I loved and since I was short on time I just used the existing florescent lighting. Well, I wasn't able to get the colors back the way I knew they were so I settled on black and white.

Can you guess the colors of the leaves?

The other aspect of fall is bringing in the plants that can't survive the New England winter. Our bonsai definitely fall in to that category. They actually moved inside last weekend, but it took me until today to set up a proper growing situation.

4000 lumens at 3500K using 60 watts from the two CFL work lights will hopefully keep them happy until the spring. This is certainly more light than they were receiving through the window and I question if it is more than they were getting on the deck...

My newest lens addition arrived today - the Canon 100mm f/2.8 Macro. This is thankfully funded partially as an anniversary gift from Irene and the rest from the sale of my Sigma 70-300 Macro to my brother. Only the Canon 17-55mm f/2.8 needed to complete my lineup.

We took a short walk and this is my favorite shot. Uncropped and unedited beyond a bit of sharpening. I wish I had put the CPL on, but I am very happy with the contrast and color the lens captures. I love the brokeh as well.

Living in New England there is always an obvious subject at this time of year...

Taken with a CPL and post processed with the Orton effect.
Oliver Chong > 2008.09.28 - Day ? :

It rained almost nonstop from Friday morning through to Sunday night. I've been watching a patch of trees along my path to work change colors, but with the all the rain it delayed my plans. Luckily Sunday afternoon offered a one hour respite from the rain so I rushed down the road to take a few shots.

This isn't my favorite shot of the day, but it does show an isolated glimpse of the beauty that New England offers in the fall. Other shots will follow as I get opportunities to get out and put the 350D to work. I'm hoping the polarizers I have on order arrive soon - they should further enhance the colors.

Sometimes the sky looks amazing at night. Storm clouds were leaving the area on the night of the full moon producing this scene.

Not an HDR.

Saturday on the Cape had us split in to two groups. Irene and I couldn't bike with our friends so we went out for a drive around the neighboring towns and beaches. We stopped at Cape Cod Light, Wellfleet, and a few beaches.

The beach where this was taken was completely quiet save for two people having lunch looking out at the water at the top of the cliff and a gentleman who was photographing the scenery. I said hello and spoke with him for just a minute as he was packing up to leave. He was shooting with a 4x5 large format camera that looked as though it must have been well over 50 years old.

There are quite a few pictures I like from this day, but everything came together in this shot to make it one of my favorites from the trip.
