Oliver Chong > 2009.10.18 Mmmm... Irene made apple bread pudding! I wouldn't dare try this shot with the 350D, but 1600 is very usable with the 7D.
Oliver Chong > 2009.06.07 Taken while on a trip to Japan in a town called Hamakita, at the Hamakita Hiryuu Matsuri, a festival in honor of Ryujin, god of the Tenryuu River. There was kite flying, dancing, music, food, and crafts. This photo is one of my favorites from the trip. I love the expression on the boy's face as he is flying his kite and the way his father (or grandfather) is positioned. Many more photos from the trip can be seen in this gallery. Only a portion of the pictures have been uploaded yet - there are many more to come in the near future.
Oliver Chong > 2009.06.01 A little while back I purchased a imitation off shoe camera cord. It looks and functions identical to the Canon OC-E3, but was a third of the price and had a longer cable. Still, that cable wasn't any where near what I wanted it to be so I set out to modify it. Using ethernet wall jacks attached to both ends of the cable I can insert a regular ethernet cable to extend the reach. I have tested it with a ~20' cable and didn't notice any problems. It took 4 tries but I finally got it working. At first I didn't think I needed the shielding, which i now believe is actually ground, to be passed over the ethernet, but I was wrong. Then I had a few issues with the punch down of the individual wires in to the ethernet jack. My multimeter was very handy to figure out where the problems were located. After doing this first one, i could probably put one together in 15 minutes or so now. Was fun getting it working and now I can ETTL high speed sync many feet from the camera without an expensive wireless solution. Additionally, I can still have the 580 act as a master without being fixed to the camera hot shoe directly. The above image is 1/4000 @ f/8. ISO 400. You can see more of this modification here.
Oliver Chong > 2009.05.23 Irene and I are spending the Memorial Day weekend near Portland, ME at a bed and breakfast. After checking in we made our way out to visit some of the lighthouses and the Old Port district of Portland. This is Portland Head Light which is located in Cape Elizabeth, ME. It has the distinction of being called the "Most photographed light house in North America." It was certainly the most busy lighthouse I have ever visited and it is by far the most photogenic I have seen. Getting to a good location to photograph from isn't a challenge at all. I took multiple exposures thinking I might do an HDR, but after seeing the images on my computer I decided on just the single exposure.
Oliver Chong > 2009.05.22 Not photographically interesting, but if you were ever in the market for the Think Tank Airport Acceleration and already owned the Lowepro Slingshot 300 (or vice versa) you might find this helpful... I'm trying to decide my next bag purchase. I have outgrown the Lowepro Slingshot and it gets uncomfortable when fully loaded. I wanted to compare the Think Tank Antidote and Acceleration, but all the stores I have visited have only had the Acceleration in stock.
Oliver Chong > 2009.05.17 Amazing how much this ~1/2" wolf spider looks like a tarantula. The white thing is it's egg sac which it carries around with it.
Oliver Chong > 2009.05.16 Like the dandelion, I was amazed at how moss looks close up. I love the spore capsules. Added a few more photos to the macro and closeup gallery from today.
Oliver Chong > 2009.05.15 My parents are in town visiting. Part of the visit always includes yard work at their house here in MA. In between jobs I pulled out the camera to see what I could find around the yard. I worked exclusively with the 100mm macro both with and without the extension tubes. I had a hard time choosing the 'daily' from all the photos I took.
Oliver Chong > 2009.5.10 Today was a good day. Irene and I went in to Boston to view Shepard Fairey's art at the Institute of Contemporary Art. You may remember I snapped an iPhone picture of his HOPE piece on Inauguration Day. After that we got some shawarma in Brookline followed by seeing Star Trek at an IMAX theater. The movie was great... we both really enjoyed it. Unfortunately, during the movie the projection stopped and we had a forced 10 minute intermission. It didn't detract much from the experience. Before the movie started I saw this silhouette of a gentleman trying to catch the attention of his family who were looking for their seats.

Today was a good day. Irene and I went in to Boston to view Shepard Fairey's art at the Institute of Contemporary Art. You may remember I snapped an iPhone picture of his HOPE piece on Inauguration Day.

After that we got some shawarma in Brookline followed by seeing Star Trek at an IMAX theater. The movie was great... we both really enjoyed it. Unfortunately, during the movie the projection stopped and we had a forced 10 minute intermission. It didn't detract much from the experience.

Before the movie started I saw this silhouette of a gentleman trying to catch the attention of his family who were looking for their seats.
